Web push tester
Send a test notification to any browser subscription with your VAPID keys, and see exactly what the push service answered. No server code needed, and your private key never leaves your browser.
Test the whole push flow
- Press New test keys, or paste your own pair from theVAPID key generator or your server's settings.
- Press Subscribe this browser and allow notifications, or paste a subscription your app saved. It must have been created with the same public key.
- Edit the message and press Send test push.
- Read the answer: 201 means the push service accepted it. Errors come with what to fix.
Your browser signs the request (VAPID, RFC 8292) and encrypts the message (aes128gcm, RFC 8291). Our server only forwards the encrypted request to the push service and keeps nothing.
Questions
How do I test web push notifications?
You need three things: your VAPID key pair, a subscription from a browser (the JSON from pushManager.subscribe()), and a message. Paste them here and press Send. The tester shows what the push service answered and explains errors such as 403 and 410.
Is my private key sent to PWA Stack?
No. Your browser signs the request with your private key and encrypts the message itself. Our server only passes the finished, encrypted request to the push service, because push services don't accept requests straight from web pages. Nothing is stored. Still, prefer test keys over production ones.
Why do I get 403 Forbidden?
The subscription was created with a different VAPID public key than the one you're signing with, or the subject isn't a valid mailto: or https: address. Every subscription is tied to the key it was made with.
Why do I get 410 Gone or 404?
The subscription has expired: the user unsubscribed, cleared site data or uninstalled the app. Delete it from your database; it will never work again.
The push was accepted but no notification appeared. Why?
Check that notifications are allowed for the site and not silenced by Focus or Do Not Disturb, and that your service worker calls showNotification() in its push event. Browsers may also hold messages for devices that are asleep.
Can I test push on an iPhone?
Yes, on iOS 16.4 or later. Add pwastack.com to the Home Screen from Safari's Share menu, open this page from the Home Screen icon and press Subscribe this browser. Safari doesn't offer web push in a normal tab.
